Pianist Victoria Mushkatkol has garnered an international reputation as a recitalist, chamber music, soloist and pedagogue, having appeared in front of orchestras in the US, Europe, Asia and Russia. Her performances have been called “incendiary,” “blazing” and “world-class” by the Kalamazoo Gazette. The New York Concert Review praised her “beautiful, deep sound” and the Grand Rapids Press hailed her tone as “full” and “vibrant.”

Mushkatkol’s artistry has taken her to leading stages worldwide from Moscow, Russia to Japan and the Republic of China, including the Royal Family of Thailand in Bangkok. In a recent concert at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, presented by the Vladimir Nielsen Foundation, Ms. Mushkatkol was proclaimed a “splendid pianist” by the New York Concert Review, which went on to write: “Her command of the keyboard is complete; her technique is so relaxed and effortless.”

Both as a performer and a pedagogue, Victoria Mushkatkol has appeared at numerous festivals, including the Puigcerda International Festival in Spain, the Festival Soesterberg in Netherlands, the Taiwan Music Festival in Taipei, the Hamptons'' Pianofest in New York, Juilliard-in-Korea Summer Festival Casual Classics, Eastern Music Festival in North Carolina, Burgos International Music Festival in Spain and the Prague International piano Festival.

With an established reputation as a sensitive and avid chamber musician, Ms. Mushkatkol has collaborated with numerous eminent artists such as violinists Evgeny Bushkov, Julia Bushkova and Charles Casselman, cellists Karen Buranskas and André Emelianoff, clarinetist Janet Hilton, as well as the Leontovich, Veronika, and Amernet String Quartets. Her performances have been broadcast on radio stations throughout the US, while her recent discography includes recordings of Bach’s French Overture and Chopin’s Ballades and Scherzi, among others.

An internationally recognized pedagogue, Ms. Mushkatkol was on the faculties of the Interlochen Arts Academy and the Oberlin Conservatory, and has presented master classes throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. Throughout her career, many of her students emerged as prize-winners on the international competition circuit, taking prominent places in the music world.

Making her debut with the Kiev Philharmonic at the extraordinary age of ten, Victoria has garnered awards from multiple competitions including the Chopin Competition in Leningrad and the Russian National Piano Competition, to name a few. Ms. Mushkatkol was a protégé of one of Russia’s most eminent piano teachers – Vladimir Nielsen – at the Petersburg Conservatory, from which she has graduated with the highest honors.

In recent years, Victoria Mushkatkol has returned to Russia, performing at the Gnessin Institute in Moscow and Museum of Music, Sheremetiev Palace, in St. Petersburg; as well as giving master classes and serving as the guest performer at the Festival International Conservatory week in St. Petersburg.

Victoria Mushkatkol is currently on the faculty at the Juilliard School Pre College Division, and is the Founder and Artistic Director of Vladimir Nielsen Piano Festival in Sag Harbor, New York since 2007.
Review:Born and trained in Russia, pianist Victoria Mushkatkol graduated with highest honors from St. Petersburg Conservatory, where she was a protégé of the eminent teacher Vladimir Nielsen; now living in New York, she honored him by founding a piano festival in his name at Sag Harbor in 2007. She is enjoying an international career as soloist, chamber musician and teacher, and is currently on the faculty of the Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division.
Victoria Mushkatkol is a splendid pianist. Her command of the keyboard is complete; her technique is so relaxed and effortless that it is a pleasure to watch her in action. Perhaps the most immediately striking aspect of her playing is her tone: rich, warm and singing, with a perfectly smooth legato, it has a large palette of colors and nuances and a wide range of dynamics. Indeed, it seemed amazing that a person of her delicate stature could produce such a powerful, sonorous sound. Her stage presence is natural and unaffected; she projects total concentration and emotional identification with the music.
In this season commemorating several composers’ anniversaries, she celebrated Chopin before intermission (returning to him for her encore), and Liszt afterwards. Her strong affinity for romantic music was immediately clear. Her Chopin was free and flexible, but the tempo changes were balanced, the transitions poised. The A-flat major Ballade Op. 47 was full of dreamy poetry and passionate ardor; the Barcarolle Op. 60 rocked and lilted. In the B minor Sonata Op. 58, she brought out the character of each movement, carefully building up the dynamic and dramatic climaxes.
The second half of the program began with Schubert’s B-flat major Impromptu, Op. 142, No. 3, a set of variations on the “Rosamunde” theme that he loved to recycle. It is a study in tonal, textural and expressive contrasts whose mood and character changes Ms. Mushkatkol captured very effectively; her rhythmic liberties, though, seemed to hark back to Chopin’s style.
Schubert’s practice of writing variations on his own songs may have inspired Liszt to use them as launching-pads for the brilliant paraphrases favored by the piano virtuosos of his day. Ms. Mushkatkol selected four of these: “Aufenthalt,” “Gretchen am Spinnrade,” “Du bist die Ruh’,” and “Erlköng.” Based on some of Schubert’s most popular songs, they demonstrate Liszt’s skill in weaving the vocal line into the accompaniment. Naturally, this demands great technical and tonal control on the part of the pianist; for example, in “Gretchen am Spinnrade,” the sound of the spinning-wheel’s repetitious whirring must be maintained through all the verses; in “Erlkönig,” where even Schubert’s original piano part with its repeated octaves and chords is a test of endurance, Liszt created a tour-de-force that seems to require more than two hands and ten fingers.
Liszt’s “Rhapsodie Espagnole” with its brilliant writing and idiomatic Spanish rhythms made a rousing finish and elicited an ovation.
The audience included many children of various ages and nationalities, whose rapt attention marked them as budding pianists; from their floral tributes and warm hugs it was natural to surmise that they were paying homage to a beloved teacher.

Уважаемый Владимир! 29 сентября сего (2008) года в 18.00 в Санкт-Петербурге, в Театральном музее (пл. Островского, 6, за "спиной" Александринского т-ра) состоится Фортепианный вечер памяти Влалимира Владимировича Нильсена. Играет Елена Серединская. Могу ли я для маленького текста в программке взять несколько строк из Вашего чудесного Воспоминания о Нильсене? Авторство и Интернет-страница будут указаны под этими строчками.

О себе коротко. Меня зовут Людмила Леонидовна Ковалёва-Огороднова. Я поступала в Ленинг. конс. в 1974 году, когда у Нильсена учился мой старший товарищ Коля Крыжаноский (мы оба из Одессы, из школы Столярского), а я слишком поздно приехала, чтобы попасть в калсс Нильсена, хотя за пару дней до экзамена успела поиграть ему, и он обнадёжил, что играю я как раз так, чтобы поступить. Потом шаталась из класса в класс, неудачно вышла замуж...

Но это всё неинтересно, пишу вскользь. Более 10 лет назад основала в СПб Рахманиновское общество, выпустила пару книг. Сейчас уже 3-й сезон делаю концерты "Антрепризы Рахманиновского общества", где регулярно среди прочих прошу играть Елену Серединскую, одну из моих хороших друзей. Играл у меня и Валерий Вишневский, и т.д... К сожалению, мы пока совершенно благотворительная организация, и многие, даже иностранцы, приезжают и играют у меня, ничего, кроме "любви" :), не получая взамен... Если Вам интересно, ответьте мне, пожалуйста. Если можете - приезжайте на этот концерт. Правда, меня в городе не будет: через 2 недели уезжаю в дальние странствия с концертами, лекциями и поисками спонсоров. Но мой и-мэйл всегда открыт, я часто в поездках работаю на компьютере. Здравствуй Сереженька! Давно собираюсь написать тебе, и честно говоря, с профессиональной целью прежде всего. Когда-то ты просил меня выслать список записей нашего дорогого профессора. Как раз сейчас я располагаю возможностью составить такой каталог и хотел просить тебя о том же, т.е. сообщить какие записи есть у тебя.
Твоя глава в Воспоминаниях мне очень понравилось: скромно, интеллигентно и ценно по информации. Молодец и большое спасибо тебе. Возможно, к юбилею Владимира Владимировича я подготовлю что-нибудь новенькое, если не будет "второй серии", то постараюсь выпустить самостоятельный сборничек. А пока выписываю, накапливаю... Хочу сделать CD с Его занятиями, но нужна предварительная немалая работа по редактированию (там много погрешностей в записи и т.п.).
Рад за тебя и надеюсь, что ты нашел более достойное применение себе, просвещая туземцев (шучу). Как кузнечики на вкус? а от гусениц нос не воротит? В Китае работал Крыжановский, который перебрался затем к Святкину в Корею, а теперь прохлаждается на тенисном корте в Одессе и, кажется, не работает.
